Earlier this morning a man came into the ER bringing his mother in and needed help getting her out of the car. He was a little rude and snippity to me but I didn't think anything of it; obviously he was upset. After his mother had been taken care of he apologized to me for the way he had acted earlier. I did not expect this and it touched my heart.
What is the greatest compliment you've received?
Funny you should ask. I have received three compliments lately that were a little extra-ordinary. They all were a surprise to me and they seemed to be the most heartfelt, sincere compliments that I have been given (in a long time anyway).
I was talking to one of my coworkers about my upcoming job change; I will be working nights in the ER starting Monday. She said I would definitely be missed, especially to her, and that no one is as nice to the patients as I am. "Not that other people aren't nice," she said, "but you're the nicest." That really made me stop and go "Hm".
Then, the same day, I was helping this lady who was a patient in the ER find out if her doctor really wanted her to be seen in there, or if she was supposed to go to another service area instead. I could tell she was really concerned about this because she felt like she might be in the wrong place. So I called around to be sure- and to give her some peace of mind. When we finally got ahold of her doctor's office we found out she really was to be seen there in the ER. She looked so relieved. And she looked at me very seriously, thanked me, and said with conviction, "You're the nicest person here." Wow, me? and twice in one day..These really are things that make me go "Hmm".
Then, a little later I was in a patient's room putting her armband on and as I was leaving she said to me that I have a very beautiful smile. I think it's amazing when I see people who, despite their pain or illness, are still able to see good in others, and even more to speak it out. I think that takes a lot of courage.
What this says to me more than anything, is that I am very blessed to have a job that lets me do what I do best and that is conducive to some of my better qualities, such as being very "nice".
